So we found a house, put in an offer and had that accepted. We expected a counter offer but they suprised us. Its a 2br 1bath old farm house built in 1900. It has a detached 1 car garage that has a summer kitchen in it. Its not huge and it needs some re-decorating type of work but we believe it to be a good solid house. It's going to be less that what I was approved for which is great. Its about a 25 mile drive from work, a small town and my neighbors have not only chickens but horses. I will blog more about it and I vow to remember to take pictures. I keep forgetting to take the camera out of the car and then I forget all about it. Now its down to frantically trying to get everything that needs to be done, ie inspections etc finished. We didn't expect it to go THIS fast and my W-2 hasn't come in yet which was going to be instrumental in it but it's covered now, THANKS MOM!!!!! The house has to pass a checklist, a home inspection, and an appraisal. Lately our middle names have been STRESS.

On a side note I got my Johnny's seed catalog, so far the only one I've gotten :(

Congratulations! I love old homes. I like that the rooms are smaller. I don't know why people think they needs 10K square feet of living space!

congratulations on the house! And thank you for such a sweet comment. It is amazing what one can make possible with what we have. (point).86 may seem small to some but do not let that discourage you. That is plenty of room for a huge garden, a decent size hen house and plenty of space to rotate that broiler chicken tractor! Don't forget to plant some dwarf fruit trees and plenty of grapes and berries! You will have a great 'stead to go with the farmhouse.
a bit of advice from The Captain (my husband) who I spoke of your comment to. He said to be sure you check on any zoning restrictions for your property size and allowable livestock. in our township, you have to have a minimum of 1 acre to keep chickens.
Hope the inspection turns out in your favor. Keep us updated and DON'T FORGET THE CAMERA! lol...

Another congratulations!! I can't wait to start reading about all the fun of homesteading your new property!

I also love old homes and wish we were getting one too. It's a consolation between more land and a boring 70's style ranch.

If you want more catalogs-go to the websites and sign up. Believe me, you get tons!!!!

Also, Tammie's advice about the fruit trees is priceless! I waited too long at my (soon-to-be) former property and my trees are still tiny and not bearing. My first task at the (soon-to-be) new place will be grapevines, berries and fruit trees!
